USS Gerald R. Ford is the first aircraft carrier of American navy’s new ‘Ford class’. Not only in the US navy but it is the most expensive warship ever built in the world. Here are some of the interesting facts about this mammoth warship.
This next generation of aircraft carrier of US navy hit the water for the first time on 8th April to carry out the builder test off the coast of Virginia. It is built to replace the existing super carriers of Nimitz class. Ford class is, without any doubt an advanced technology but it took almost a decade to launch the warship that resulted in increasing the budget heavily.
- The US warship costs $12.9 billion dollars making it the most expensive naval vessel ever built. The estimated budget earlier was $10 billion dollars.
- More than 500 ship builders has contributed in construction of the expensive warship. Thousands of manufacturers have supplied parts for the warship.
- 160 air strikes can be launched from the deck of US navy’s giant warship in a single day.
The US navy has taken a step forward with the construction of a new generation warship after over 42 years. On 1 March, 1975 USS Nimitz was launched from the same Virginia coast. The US navy warship is named after the renowned 38th US president Mr. Gerald Ford. During the announcement of the combat ship in 2013, Ms. Susan Ford, daughter of the former president signed on the ‘CVN-78’ halls classification and number of the warship.
Ford is also the first aircraft carrier which is designed after curating a 3-D product model of the same. With the help of advanced computer tools and technology, each single part of the combat ship was designed completely through the 3-D model techniques. Thousands of designers, engineers and planners worked for months to curate the extraordinary properties of the warship before the actual construction was commenced.
Shape of the deck of Ford class is same as the Nimitz class. But it is designed in such a way that it allows the sudden take-offs of flights with ease. A small island is also built on the deck. It is capable of launching 90 aircrafts like joint Strike Fighter, Super Hornet, G Growler at the same time. Traditional catapult is replaced with a magnetic technology that is used in ‘Roller coaster’. This technology is capable of launching 160 air strikes in a single day, which was 140 in the case of Nimitz class. Maximum 220 air strikes can take place from both the decks of the warship during war.
The construction for Ford was started in November 2009, whereas the designing work of Ford was started back in 2006. In 2013,the official announcement of combat ship was done. Ford was supposed to come in service in 2015 but various issues got encountered with its advanced technologies which farther increased the estimated budget of the warship. US has signed a proposal for the construction of 10 aircraft carriers in the Ford class. Each carrier would be giving services for the next 50 years.
Other combat ship are yet to be built and launched in every 5 years interval. This whole project will take a big time to get completed which is estimated to be till 2058.
